Fire fighting period

1st May, when the fire fighting period officially begins in Greece. Here, where the climatic conditions and geographic terrain favour fires. Everyone plays a most crucial role to prevent them.

The Fire Brigade, as always by our side, reminds us the measures that we need to take to avoid starting a fire.

To prevent a fire

– we avoid outdoor work that may cause fire (welding, use of saw, drill or other tool that produce sparks).
– we do not light outdoor barbecues during the summer months woods/forests or in places where there are dried grass, branches and twigs.
– we avoid smoking bees and do not abandon the lit residues in the countryside,
– we do not burn dry grass, twigs, reeds and rubbish in the countryside,
– we never throw lit cigarettes and matches, from the car window nor when we are in the woods,
– we do not use fireworks/firecrackers in areas that are close to woods,
– we never park our vehicle in places where there is dry grass. The cars catalyst is kept overheated for a long time, resulting in creating a serious fire hazard,
– we are aware that the sparks caused by the exhaust of all types of vehicles can cause a fire,
– we always comply with the prohibition of access signs in the woods/forest at high risk periods.
– we do not leave rubbish in the forest/woodland. There is a risk of ignition.

What to do in case of a fire

– we phone IMMEDIATELY number 199 or 112 giving clear information on the location and the exact spot where we are, as well as information about the specific position we see the fire,
– we describe the kind of vegetation that is burning,
– we determine the direction of the fire,
– we inform about the intensity and direction of the wind in the area.

The call to 199 is free of charge from both fixed and mobile phones. If your mobile phone displays the word ’emergency calls’ or ‘offline’ call 112, which is also the emergency number for the whole of the European Union.
