  • National Health System at its limits

  • Greece and 9 other countries on the “very worrying list”

The onset of the fourth wave of the coronavirus pandemic is testing the resilience of the National Health System with experts describing the borderline situation in which hospitals find themselves sending a distress signal.

The pressure on the National Health System is very significant as there is an increase in new imports and new intubations that are expected to burden the NSS even more in the coming weeks. The completeness of the available Covid-19 ICUs in the territory has reached 88% and in Thessaloniki 97%.

50% increase in new cases – 47,000 active
The data are worrying, as the number of new cases has increased by 50% in the last week and the active cases in our country have exceeded 47,000 people.

There is a significant increase in the number of tests performed, about 2% of the population is checked every day. According to the data from EODY, the average rolling positivity of the laboratory tests is about 2.2% and the positivity recorded in the targeted mass open sampling performed by EODY is significantly higher with the average weekly positivity of 3.75 %.

“There are no other possibilities, the pressure is great. “If someone comes to the intensive care unit, we have nowhere to put him,” said the director of the 2nd ICU, Nikos Kapravelos, speaking to SKAI.

At the same time, the president of EINAP, Matina Pagoni, rang the alarm bell for the seriousness of the situation. “We are at war”, he said and continued: “The situation in the hospitals is difficult, especially in Northern Greece and it is coming down centrally. These are difficult days for the medical world, there are confrontations with the private doctors who leave their clinics, I understand them, but we are in a time of war, and when we are at war we take up arms and fight, we are not separated, the pandemic must go away and return to normalcy as we did two years ago ”
