Greece to British Museum: “Fischer’s views are remnants of colonialism”

Views about the legitimate ownership of the Parthenon Marbles as they have been expressed by the director of the British Museum Hartwig Fischer are “remnants of colonialism, ignore the international debate and the Declarations of Unesco,” Greek Culture Minister Myrsini Zorba said on Saturday.

Fischer’s statement of “legitimate ownership” demonstrates “a close, cynical management concept,” Zorba said.

In an interview with Greek daily Ta Nea on Saturday, British Museum Director, Hartwig Fischer, said ““We don’t return and we don’t lend the Parthenon Marbles,” claiming at the same time that  “Greece is not the legitimate owner.”

The Greek Culture Minister added “It is regrettable to hear such [claims] by the director of the British Museum, a well-known art historian. He downgrades the cultural heritage from invaluable universal value to a buying-and-selling.”

“Such views are diametrically opposed to the perceptions that prevail today in the international field of culture. They are remnants of colonialism and ignore the international debate and Unesco Statements. More so, when it comes to a mutilated monument, a timless symbol of the country to which its reunification and rehabilitation are due, according to the basic principle of “integrity” as required by the Unesco Convention of 1972,” Myrsini Zorba said in her statement.
