Greek National team

In the final list for the games with Liechtenstein and Bosnia is the 25-year-old Zakynthian, Haris Mavrias.

The federal coach Angelos Anastasiades included the ace of Cyprus Omonia in the mission for these two games.

The games are set for 23rd and 26th March (Liechtenstein and Bosnia respectively).

14th March 2019 is a day that will be deeply engraved in the memory of Haris Mavrias.

The 25-year-old midfielder after an absence of 4.5-years, is returning to the national team for two games with the “blue-whites”, in the context of the Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Incidentally, his last participation with the national mens team was recorded on 18th November 2014, in a friendly match against Serbia while he had participated four times previously.

For that matter, not many were waiting for the footballer to succeed in reopening the door to the national team, after his transfer to Omonia last January, having six months earlier passed through Hibernian in Scotland.

Mavrias counts 10 appearances and 1 goal with the shirt of the Cypriot team and even became MVP for February, following a vote of Omonia friends.

The personal choice of the “three-leaf” technician, Yiannis Anastasiou, mainly plays in the right-back position, without forgetting his old right wing.

Following his departure from Croatia and the end of his co-operation with Rijeka in the summer of 2018, he searched for and knocked-on many super-league doors (Atromitos, Aris, Asteras Tripolis) for repatriation, without opening any of them.

The best proposal that came to him, came from Apollona Smyrni, with a net annual remuneration of 30,000 euros (!) plus some bonuses for achieving various goals.

And all this for a player who, in the summer of 2013, sold for 3 million euros from Panathinaikos to Sunderland and besides his term in the English team, he also wore the jerseys of Fortuna Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, Rijeka and Hibernian.

From the moment Mavrias found that he couldn’t find a team in Greece, he turned his antennae abroad, once more, and found a six-month contract at Hibernian.

With the Scottish team he ‘clocked-up’ just six appearances and in January 2019 moved to Cyprus on behalf of Omonia.

A choice that proved he is a star, if we judge from the restarting of his career and his fresh call to the national team.

On the 18th of the month, the internationals will assemble for their first training, to begin their preparation for the games to be played.

The mission of the national team for the two games are: Barkas, Paschalakis, Vlachodimos, Papastathopoulos, Siovas, Risbanis, Bakakis, Koutris, Valerianos, Mavrias, Kolovos, Samaris, Mandalos, Bakassetas, Masoura, Boukhalakis, Zeka, Kourbelis, Siopis, Fortouni, Mitroglou, Koulouri, Donis.
