The plenary of the Greek Parliament voted to revoke the broadening of the tax-free basis on Friday, the last day of its operation due to the upcoming snap elections in July.
The bill passed with the votes of ruling party SYRIZA. Communist KKE and To Potami voted “present”. New Democracy, KINAL/PASOK and Golden Dawn abstained form voting saying that the current government is not legitimate to pass bills ahead of the snap elections.
The austerity measure to broaden the tax-free basis below annual income of 6,000 euros was enforced by the International Monetary Fund in 2016 and adopted by SYRIZA/ANEL government in 2017. The measure was to be implemented as of 1. January 2020.
The bill contained also the amendment to abolish the positive measures that were due to go into effect in next year.
The Plenary of the Greek Parliament came together for the last time in its current constitution.
The Presidential degree to dissolve the Parliament ahead of the snap elections is pending.
Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras is expected to visit the president on June 10 and ask him to declare early elections scheduled to take place on July 7, 2019.
