high in the agenda is the Biological Waste System plant.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport held a wide-ranging meeting of relevant actors on the finalization of the public infrastructure upgrade projects in Zakynthos.

The meeting, organized by the Vice-President of Zakynthos and former Minister Stavros Kontonis, was attended by the General Director of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport Mr. Antonis Kotsonis, the President of DEYZ, Mr. Konstantinos Kokkoris, members of the Municipal Enterprise Service, executives of the Ministry and representatives of technical offices conducting studies to improve the infrastructure of the island.

It was decided to accelerate the procedures on behalf of the Municipality of Zakynthos for the submission of the necessary studies to approve by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and the Ministry of Finance projects of a total amount of approximately 31 million euro.

Specifically, following the submission of the necessary files by the Municipality, the following projects will be financed:

  1. Expanding and upgrading Biological Cleaning to serve 75% of the island’s total tourist activity. The total budget is 13 million euro.
  2. Completion of the city’s sewerage network to cover areas outside the coverage of the current network. This project has an estimated budget of € 12 million.

At the same time, it was decided to proceed immediately to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport for the replacement of asbestos pipes as part of the state of emergency due to the recent earthquake. The project is estimated at around EUR 6 million.

It is worth noting that the process of screening, approval and funding will take place rapidly on the data of these major infrastructure projects, as they will be integrated into high-priority national planning.

Stavros Kontonis: Zakynthos, with these projects our Island will turn into a modern one

Zakynthos MP Stavros Kontonis stated that: “With the completion of the above procedures, Zakynthos will enter into a course of qualitative upgrading of its infrastructure for the benefit of residents and visitors, but also for the benefit of the environment, agriculture, water supply and irrigation of the island.

The long period of degradation, withering and abandonment of public infrastructure is over. Zakynthos, with these projects, will turn into a modern island, with savings, respect for the ecosystem and the health of its citizens.

If some hope that we will return to the previous regime of mismanagement, deforestation and stagnation they will be refuted once more. The people of Zakynthos have both memory, knowledge and judgment”.

President of the Water Board (DEAZ) Mr Kostas Kokkoris spoke about the broad meeting held at the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport and stressed that it was a positive step to upgrading the public infrastructure projects on our island.

“The atmosphere was very positive from the meeting in the Ministry of Infrastructure. At the end of the month, we will submit the bio-expansion studies that will have been prepared and the environmental study needed. There will be an extension for the rest of the city to join the sewage/ drainage system, including the extension of the Belusi – Tragaki network, as is the extension to legalize Planos. This will help in the development of the tourist product of Zakynthos “.

Mr. Kokkoris also referred to the procedures that must be taken to complete the studies and the projects to be implemented.

“Studies have to be completed. It is about 25 million euros. It concerns the extension of the organic and connection of the sewerage networks. We also have done a study for upgrading the existing biological system to cope with the next tourist season. This study will be submitted to the Friendly Council program, (Filodimos). We also have done another study and we will file it for the replacement of asbestos pipes that are in use for water supply “.

It is noteworthy that by mid-March the environmental impact study on biological treatment should be delivered after the new extension of the recent Water Board meeting. The first phase of the study was completed in due time, and the same was done with the supporting work that had to be done before the second phase, such as the opinion of the Civil Aviation Authority, the expansion of the land, the assignment and the preparation of the Environment Investigation Authority and the chemical- study. However, because of the delays in securing funding for the study and the completion of the project, timetables have become increasingly stifling since a series of actions have to be launched in view of the needs of the next summer season. Of course, after the wide-ranging meeting, everything seems to be taking their course, but this is a  must.
