ISLANDS AIRPORTS READY TO WELCOME TRAVELERS. INTERVIEW WITH GENERAL MANAGER OF OPERATIONS FOR FRAPORT

Covid- 19 may have bought about a unique crisis to air travel.  However, the airports of Greece are ready and completely updated to welcome, with safety, travelers when it is allowed.

The upgrades of Zakynthos, Kefalonia and Corfu’s airports by FRAPORT have almost finished with the results bearing no resemblance of the past. The General manager of Operations for FRAPORT Mr Iliad Maragakis spoke to our own television station Ionian about the work of upgrading the airports along with the safety protocols which will be followed.

“In Zakynthos there has been a complete modernisation of the area, the building may not have changed but the interior is completely different, in regard the way passengers will move around the building as well as the equipment we will use, being of the latest technology “

Safety Measures.

Due to the coronavirus everything has changed at the airports regarding health and safety. Cleaning will be more often and the use of masks by passengers as well as staff is considered essential. Plexiglass has been put up around the check in area and many travel companies are insisting on tight control of the buses used to take passengers from the gate to the aircraft. “We have been getting ready since February, under the guidance of ΕΟΔΥ, European and international organisation rules. The safety rules as such as to co inside with not only our company policy but that of the Greek government. We want all passengers to understand that air travel is the safest form of transportation. The airport cleaning and disinfecting is in line with European and international regulations. Apart from the use of masks by staff and travelers, the luggage containers will be cleaned after ever use as well as the reduced use of the buses from the gates to the aircraft. Extra cleaning will also be introduced at the passport control area.”

In More Detail.

1) Arrivals: following each arrival, thorough cleaning and disinfection of all high touch point surfaces, including doors and door handles, conveyor belts, handrails, elevator buttons, airport seating and tables, water dispensers, restroom basins and equipment etc.)

2) Departures: following each departure, thorough cleaning and disinfection of all high touch point areas.

3) Check-in counters: upon completion of the check-in procedure for each flight, thorough cleaning and disinfection of all high touch point areas.

4) Gate counters: following the embarkation procedure for each flight, thorough cleaning and disinfection of all high touch point areas.

5) Automatic Teller Machines (Cash ATMs): thorough cleaning, according to existing protocols and recommendations.

6) Passport and Customs Control Areas accessible to passengers: thorough cleaning and disinfection of all high touch point surfaces, following each use.

7) Other common areas and uncontrolled facilities: thorough cleaning and disinfection of all high touch point surfaces.

– Security Screen Checkpoints: following the departure of all passengers of each flight, or every 3 hours if that’s not feasible, thorough cleaning and disinfection of all high touch point surfaces (personal itemz trays and X-ray conveyor belts).

– Restrooms (WC): thorough cleaning and disinfection of all facilities (including doors and door handles, water taps and basins, toilet bowls and other accessories or equipment, etc.). Paper towel dispensers are installed at every airport toilet, while soap and running water supply is checked regularly, so as to ensure a maximum level of personal hygiene for both passengers and airport personnel, in accordance with recommendations by WHO and Public Health Officials.

– Thorough cleaning and disinfection of Fraport Greece office facilities, at regular frequency.

– Tensa-barriers are put before every check-in counter and sales desk, so that a safe distance is maintained between passengers during check-in & ticketing. Moreover, we have required id badge issuing officers to wear gloves and we have reduced the number of people entering id badge issuing facilities at the same time.

These measures have been received positively by the travel industry who have shown their success with a positive message that Greece is a safe destination. This year along with our regular arrivals we have also had new companies receding slits at the airport- namely Volotea and Wizz Air. There may have been a 99% decrease in arrivals at the airport in April but the message so far from the travel companies is positive for our regional airports.
