Minister of Education examining when the National Exams will take place.

The Education Department of Greece is examining their options in regards to holding the national exams. There are two options on the table. One scenario is that they may be held in July and the second in late August with early September. At present, according to the Nation’s plan for July, executives who are responsible for preparing for exams have given priority to the first scenario, in July,

However, as emphasised by Department spokesmen they will wait to see what will happen over Easter to determine their course.

Due to Coronavirus, schools are closed nationally up until the 10th of April

Although the Education Department are aiming for July if there is still fear of the virus spreading “we will not put children at risk herding them into test centers” they say. “If this risk is removed, then all other issues will be easy to address. We are constantly working in new directions. ”
For her part, Minister Niki Kerameos states that “the time of the national exams activities will depend on the final suspension of the schools. However, our goal is to stay as close to their established date as possible. The messages from the teachers are that the anxiety of the parents and students from the final year grade has “hit red”, as everyone expects the exams to take place at least in July and not at the end of August or later.

However, for this to happen, the Ministry of Education should announce a cut back on the test material. It is certain that in the coming days all school units will be asked for information on the percentage of material covered in order to consider a cut back. Taking exams in July will not be an easy task due to the high temperatures, but students definitely prefer this version rather than the second option.

“If the national exams take place in July, examinations will be held early in the morning, for example from 7am, to 10am.

At the same time, the following scenarios have fallen on the table, too: –  Extending the school year, replacing school holidays and excursions for extra teaching time.  All of this, after all, is provided by the relevant legislation and these are things that have been done in the past for a variety of reasons.
