UK MPs have been sitting in Parliament today in order to debate the Brexit deal struck between Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the EU. With barely two weeks to go, the UK are due to leave the EU on 31 October 2019, and many MPs spoke today on whether they agree with the latest deal or not.
The Letwin amendment was the voted on this afternoon – “the house will not approve a deal until the related legislation has been passed, so the PM must still seek an extension” – and the result was:
Yes – 322
No – 306
This means that a majority of 16 MPs voted to delay the approval of the current Brexit deal.
This now means that Boris Johnson will be legally required to request an extension from the EU tonight, the letter requesting the extension to be sent by Monday. It’s likely that the extension, if agreed, will be for three months.
The Prime Minister has said however that he doesn’t want an extension but due process will now have to be followed by Parliament.
There is mention of a further meaningful vote as early as Tuesday but it’s not yet confirmed.
