A new decision regarding the prohibitation of vessels approaching-mooring and swimming in the area of Ormos “Navagio” (Shipwreck) in Zakynthos commenced yesterday under the Port Authority of Zakynthos and this decision takes into account the very serious issue concerning the safety of visitors within the area.

This new decision, which will enter into force on the 1^st of March, 2019, takes into account a number of documents and decisions that have been made in relation to the region, as well as the data created after the landslide on the 13^th of September and the severe earthquake that followed on the 26^th of October, which notably thousands of aftershocks have followed as the phenomenon is still continuing.

 

Despite the announcements and promises by local authorities to tour operators operating in the marine area, both the Municipality and the Region have not shown the reaction one would expect, in order for a new ban decision not to cause a state of conflict or confusion, but on the contrary, to make the best possible adjustments needed.

 

It is noted that despite the Society’s demand for professionals who are even ready to submit their own proposals, to have a wide-rang meeting with all stakeholders concerned, there has been no such initiative at the moment. Lastly, there was no initiative to give the Port Authority the “guarantees” that had been called for during that time regarding ​​security in the area, in order to give the green light to remove the bans. However, it is noted that from the Municipality of Zakynthos, the IGME (Institute of Geological and Mining Research), study on the coast was notified to the Port Authority, which includes proposals and conclusions but not clear instructions, such as those requested by the Port Authority prior to the adoption of a new decision.

 

An issue that also needs to be highlighted is that of land access, as it is known that the only access road to the shipwreck is forestry, which means that access to private cars and coaches is not allowed, and there are security issues as well.

OUR DECISION:-

The prohibition of approaching and mooring of all motorized or non-motorized floating vessels and the prohibition of bathing at Ormos Navagio area in Zakynthos for the period starting from March 1st, 2019 until such time as the (q) and (r) relevant and institutionally competent to eradicate the risk due to the natural phenomenon (t) concerned.

The offenders of this decision, irrespective of the joint criminal or civil liability, are subject to administrative sanctions in accordance with Article 157 of the Judicial Code. 187/73 (Government’s Gazette 261 A / 73) as in force.

From the entry into force of this Agreement, any other Decision that conflicts with it and / or addresses matters governed by it shall be abolished.

This Decision should be published in the Government Gazette.
