New emergency planning for the whole island is needed.

The joint assessment that it is necessary to develop a new fully modernized emergency plan for the city, densely populated villages and tourist areas, despite the fact that the Zakynthians have behaved impeccably during the last seismic activity and rightly feel safe, expressed during the discussion, the candidate mayor Yiannis Agalianos, with the chairman of the Earthquake Protection Agency, Professor Efthimios Lekkas. At the meeting, which also included the candidates for the combination of “Announcement” Giannis Kopanas (Dr. Physicist and researcher), Grigoris Roubanis (journalist-writer) and Nikos Tsipiras (chairman of the city council), there was an extensive discussion about the latest seismic phenomena on the island, the resilience of buildings and preventive measures to protect residents and holidaymakers during the summer months. it has been shown that the resilience of buildings and infrastructure has worked well. The facilities are safe and not causing worries. However, it is necessary to further strengthen some public clusters, with emphasis on several old schools, to make their behaviour more likely in future seismic vibrations. There was also a need for a state involvement in the maintenance of most of Zakynthos buildings, especially those built before 1980, which have so far been overwhelmed by a multitude of seismic events, combined with the wear of time. Also discussed was the case of the shipwreck area, which is the cause of the interest of thousands of travellers every year, and it has been found that by taking appropriate measures to enhance safe traffic, the region can become even more attractive and become an even more attractive destination, which upgrading will enhance the tourist activities of our island. What is also needed, as the chairman of OASP said, is the continued readiness of the state and the local government mechanism to act immediately and automatically whenever necessary to ensure the organized behaviour of the population and especially the vulnerable groups. At this point, Yiannis Agalianos placed as a priority the update of the “Emergency Planning”, who has not been informed of the changes that have taken place in the operation of the city since 2002, when his previous own town hall was completed and which concerned only the city of Zakynthos (since it was then in its own jurisdiction). Now, the new design must cover the entire island with its housing structures, as well as special provisions for tourist areas, especially during the summer months.
The President of the OASP Professor Mr. Lekkas pledged to hand to the Municipality, all the latest plans of the organization, which have been elaborated with the most modern means and declared willing, as always, for any cooperation he may request, to deal with seismic phenomenon.
