“Okeanis” to strike Greece with snowfalls, sharp temperature drop, winds up to 10B

Enjoy the Greek sunshine and warmth as much as you can, because a new cold wave coming from the Siberia is expected to sweep across Greece. Barometric low “Okeanis” will strike the country as of Friday, 22. February 2019, with freezing temperatures, heavy snowfalls, gale-force North-East winds, powerful rainfalls, thunderstorms and hail.

According to the weather warning issued by the Greek National Meteorological Service, the weather forecast is as follows:

Snowfalls, locally heavy

Saturday, Feb 23:

As of Early morning hours in Macedonia, Thrace, islands of the North Aegean sea. Gradually also in Thessaly, East Sterea, Evia, North and East Peloponnese.

Snow will fall at an altitude of 200-300 meters in Thessaly and 300-500 m in Peloponnese.

Phenomenon will weaken Saturday night in the North.

Sunday, Feb 24

East Sterea, Evia, North and East Peloponnese, Thessaly and Sporades islands.

Attica and Athens

Snowfalls on Saturday (Feb 23) afternoon, initially at the mountainous and semi-mountainous areas as well as in areas of the North with low altitude. The forecast does not exclude snow in the center of Athens in the evening.

Gale-Force Winds up to 10 Beaufort

North-East winds blowing with intensity 8-9 Beaufort, and locally up to 10 Beaufort in the Aegean Sea.

The phenomenon will gradually weaken on Sunday

Rainfalls and Thunderstorms

Powerful rainfalls and thunderstorms mainly on Sunday in Cyclades islands, Crete and the Dodecanese. On Crete also on Monday, Feb 25.

Sharp Temperature Drop

Temperature will sharply decrease by 10 degrees Celsius first in the North of the country as of Saturday.

Frost mainly in the mainland in the evening and night Saturday. Frost will be locally very strong also on Sunday and Monday in the North.

And then, Okeanis will go away and sometime later, spring will come.
