The pink Moon will be visible tonight, Tuesday, April 7th. It is the first full moon of Spring.
According to astronomers, this supermoon will be the second of a total of three this year, but is expected to be the most impressive.
The colour of the full moon will be almost pink and this is because the Earth’s atmosphere dissolves the blue and green light waves and leaves only the red, orange and yellow ones.
The moon will be very close to Earth, making it 30% brighter and 14% larger. The elliptical orbit of the moon means that the point that will approach the Earth will be about 220,000 miles.
Why is it called the Pink moon?
Many liken the moon to a light pink hue with a shrubby plant, ground phlox, which blooms in April, giving flowers a bright pink colour. They are one of the first to bloom in the spring and symbolize new beginnings. The name comes from the Indian culture. Native Americans used to give names to each of the full moons, depending on the seasons in which they appeared. Other names for the April full moon used in the west are Egg Moon and Full Fish Moon.
It actually announces Easter. It dictates the start of Passover in the Jewish tradition, while in Christianity Easter falls on the Sunday after the first full moon of the Spring Equinox.
