Greece’s main opposition party New Democracy has been playing dirty ahead of European and local elections and on the occasion of the confidence vote in the Parliament.
On Wednesday during the debate in Parliament, ND leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis claimed that the deceased father of Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and a cousin of him had a company that did profitable business by receiving contracts during the junta regime 1967-1974.
The claim was further spread by senior ND officials, like MEP Michalis Kefalogiannis, who appeared on a private TV magazine holding a picture allegedly showing Tsirpas’ father next to dictator Georgios Papadopoulos.
Next day, Kefalogiannis tweeted that the picture was not a real one and that he “takes responsibility” for the fake news. However, he added that “today it is known that the Tsipras family earned many millions during the dictatorship.”

ND claim was adopted and spread like a wildfire by local media that support the party of main opposition.
In a statement, the office of Prime Minister called on Mitsotakis to show “political courage and get out of the mist or will he continue to sink into the mud?.”
The statement recalled that Mitsotakis reproduced fake news originally produced by a far-right “fascist yellow press” newspaper and that this claim was reproduced by other ND official like vice-president Adonis Georgiadis and M. Kefalogiannis..
On Thursday, Tsipras sister and his cousin spoke to media in an effort to restore the honor of their deceased fathers.
Media anticipate the new debate between Tsipras and Mitsotakis before the confidence vote on Friday midnight.
The Prime Minister is expected to win the vote with 152 Yes.
