Prince Charles and Camilla attend celebrations of Greek Independence.
The UK Royal couple Prince Charles and Camilla are currently in Greece, on behalf of the UK government, attending the Greek Bicentenary Independence Day celebrations, taking place in Athens.
The start of the two day trip saw Prince Charles and his wife Camilla at the National Gallery in Athens, for an official opening, where they were accompanied by Prime Minister Mitsotakis and his wife.
Afterwards Prince Charles attended a state dinner lead by the Hellenic Republic President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. At the dinner Prince Charles made a speech in which he said:
“My wife and I could not be more delighted to be back in Greece, which has long held the most special place in my heart. After all, Greece is the land of my grandfather; and of my father’s birth, nearly one hundred years ago, in the centenary year of Greek Independence.
Later, it was in Athens that my dear grandmother, Princess Alice, during the dark years of Nazi occupation, sheltered a Jewish family – an act for which in Israel she is counted as ‘Righteous Among The Nations’.”
Prince Charles also talked of the links between Greece and the UK which he described as “strong and vital”.
Today, on the official date celebrating the country’s 200th year of Independence Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will be guests at the Memorial of the Unknown Soldier for a wreath laying memorial and Military Parade both of which commemorate the 1821 Greek uprising against the Ottoman’s.
