Several earthquakes with strongest 5R rattle Greece and Albania borders

A series of consecutive earthquakes have been rattling the regions along the borders between Greece and Albania on Saturday morning. At least six tremors with the strongest measuring 5 R have been recorded between 07:00 – 10:00 in the morning.

The earthquakes have been felt in Kastoria, Ioannina and other regions of Northern Greece.

The first earthquake measuring 5 R occurred at 7:33 a.m. It epicenter was near the town of Korce in Albania, nor far away form the borders to Greece.

It was followed by a tremor of 4.7 R six minutes later. Its epicenter was located in the area between Igoumenitsa and Ioannina, Epirus, in Western Greece. Three minor earthquakes followed.

At 10 a.m. a tremor measuring 4.9 R occurred again near Korce, 47 km North of the Greek city of Kastoria.

By 12:30 noon, nine earthquakes had occurred in the Albanian region of the borders in the last six hours.

Residents in Kastoria are concerned about the intense seismic activity, however, seismologists monitoring the phenomenon are reassuring that there is no reason of concern.

The Director of Greek Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization Efthimios Lekkas said that there is an accumulated seismic activity in the last hours.

“We monitor the phenomenon, we are trying to  try to see if the one earthquake is affecting the other, but this is not clear yet. Florina, Kastoria and Kozani are quite far away. There is no reason of concern, so far,” he stressed.
