Special Olympics

On 8th March, the 91-member Special Olympics Hellas delegation departed from Athens International Airport, El Venizelos, to take part in the Special Olympics World Games “Abu Dhabi 2019”.

In the delegation, taking part as coach of weightlifting – powerlifting, is Andreas Kolettis, “member of the Board of Directors of Lampsis”, President of the Greek Association Dynamic Triathlon, with four athletes and lots of hope for several medals. The President of the “Panhellenic Association of Friends of Children with Special Abilities SOS KIDS LAMPSI”, Ilias Hondrogiannis and the secretary Stella Stathara, accompanied them to the airport and farewelled them.

At the Special Olympics World Games “Abu Dhabi 2019”, which will take place from 8th to 22th March, will be taking part more than 7,000 athletes from 170 countries, accompanied by 2,500 coaches, who will compete in 24 different summer sports and 1,000 referees/judges , 5,000 family members, 1,000 journalists, 20,000 volunteers and around 500,000 spectators will be there to applaud the efforts of the athletes and to share with them the joy of sports.

In this great event, Special Olympics Hellas will participate with athletes taking part in 14 sports. The sports are – swimming, track, badminton, basketball, bocce, bowling, cycling, horseback riding, unified football, rhythmic, canoe – kayak, unified sailing, table tennis and finally dynamic weightlifting – powerlifting.

All national delegations participating in the Special Olympics World Games «Abu Dhabi 2019» will be hosted (host town) for four days, 8 to 11th March, in one of the seven Emirates.

The Greek delegation will be hosted in the Emirate Ras Al Khaimah, which has a rich history as it was known for its port and pearls, which were the whitest and the roundest in the world. It is the fourth largest emirate and is considered the most spectacular due to the variety of landscapes.
