On Thursday night 7 May, those who look at the sky will have the opportunity to enjoy the last of the four supermoon of 2020. The moon will look even more impressive as it will look bigger and brighter than usual.
The Moon will reach closer to Earth and specifically at a distance of 361,184 kilometres (ground). When the supermoon is still near the horizon, then the moon looks even bigger in the eyes of observers. |
Instead, the Moon will be at the farthest point of its elliptical orbit from Earth (apogee) on October 31st. On that day, the full moon will appear almost 14% smaller.
The first full moon for 2020 took place on Sunday, February 9, while on March 8 followed the second, the so-called “worm full moon”. The next full moon was on April 8. At 21.08 Greek time, the moon approached its periphery, the closest point on Earth, and so the “pink” supermoon took place, a characterization that comes from the color of a flower, as the wild phlox blooms these days.
We will see the next full moon in May 2021.
The term supermoon is not scientific, but was created by astrologer Richard Nole in 1979.
The near coincidence of a full moon with the moon’s perigee is expected to make tidal phenomena stronger.
