Supreme Court prosecutor order inquiry into private funding of political parties

Supreme Court prosecutor Xeni Dimitriou ordered a preliminary inquiry into allegations of exorbitant private funding to political parties, Athens news agency amna reports late on Monday.

Τhe inquiry takes aim at media reports quoting from the deposition of former PASOK official Theodoros Tsoukatos on a case of SIEMENS bribery scandal.

Last week, Tsoukatos told the court that PASOK received “private funding” in the 2000 electoral campaign period amounting to 16 million Drachmas, some 50 million euros. He did not reveal the names of the private companies who filled PASOK’s cash registers with money.

However, he said that this practice has long been established and continues today.

I can not name names, there is a code of confidentiality because these companies did not want their names to be revealed. Many of them still fund political parties with [so-called] public relations funds,” Tsoukatos told the court.

The prosecutor ordered financial affairs prosecutor Marianna Psaroudaki to determine liability in Tsoukatos’ claims, and asked her to relate her preliminary inquiry to the ongoing case on loans made to parties, amna noted.

PS I suppose the parties did not and still do not issue receipts for the money they receive, neither they tax it.
