Tonight is the first calling of the “Senio”.  A zakynthian way of announcing that next week is the feast of our patron St. Dionysios.

Just as the sun sets, a little after 8.30 pm, the church of Saint Dionysios will fire 12 cannon shots. These symbolize the 12 months of the year and the days the relics of our Holy Dionysios remains in his chamber.

The Church bell tower of St. Dionysios, will sound solemnly the Senia, kampanokrousies, as we say. Hearing the cannon shots and church bells, residents will be aware that celebrations are soon to take place. They will also prepare for the feast.

Exchanging the Greek words of  “Xronia Polla Voithia mas o Agios, are words wishing those who hear it, a long life with the help of our Saint.  Many Zakynthians will gather today underneath the Church bells within the square of the church, to watch closely the Senio.
