UK Summer holidays 2020, clarification

Many people are questioning what’s happening with summer holidays today after UK Health Secretary Matt Hancock was put on the spot on ITV’s ‘This Morning’.

Mr Hancock was asked if “Summer was Cancelled”, meaning was it unlikely that foreign summer holidays would take place this year?

In response Mr Hancock said,

“I think that’s likely to be the case. We haven’t made a final decision yet but it is clear that we will seek to reopen hospitality, some hospitality, from early July if we keep successfully reducing the spread of this virus.”

Mr Hancock also talked about the requirement of people having to social distancing and went on to say,

“The conclusion from that is it is unlikely that big, lavish international holidays are going to possible for this summer.

“I just think that’s a reality of life.”

The reality however, is that no one at present, including the government, actually know what will happen. Whilst Mr Hancock has responded slightly negatively in this particular TV interview, causing worry in the tourism industry and with tourists, nothing has actually been confirmed in regards to cancelling international holidays for the remainder of this year.

In fact international flights and holidays were not even mentioned in the new plans released by the government only yesterday. We need to urge great caution and not jump to any conclusions about what will happen, until a formal confirmation is given about what will happen with international travel and holidays in 2020.

Rumours don’t help at all and they only fuel more problems and hurt tourist destinations and their connected business.

Please let’s continue to take everything day by day, and keep listening to and following, updated guidance. Let’s not make assumptions from one interview, where a government minister was put on the spot.

At present we just do not know what will happen and as everyone knows Greece has done an excellent job to contain the virus, and it is a safe haven for now. Every effort, not only from the Greek government, but businesses all round, means the country is preparing to open to from 01 July for anyone who is able to travel.
