Elections

26th May, 2019,  is election day in Greece. Three votes will be cast by each voter – local, regional and European elections.                                                                                 Voting is compulsory, by law, in Greece, tho’ having stated that no one that didn’t vote has been prosecuted.

As a citizen of the EU, and permanent resident of Greece, you are able to not only vote in both European and local elections – municipal and regional – but also stand as a candidate (mayor, councilor and member of the regional council) without the acquisition of Greek nationality, provided that you are registered under the applicable legislation in the special electoral lists of the municipality of your place of residence.                                                                                                                                                     (in accordance with the provisions of Decree 133/1997 (A 121) 1, as amended by DS 320/1999 (A 305) and Law 2196/1994 (A 41), which have been incorporated into Greek legislation by Directives 94/80 / EC and 93/109 / EC, respectively) and (in accordance with the provisions of Articles 10 and 48 thereof. 4555/2018).

For registration in the special electoral lists, European Union citizens must go to the municipality of residence, present a valid identity document (Identity card or passport) in order to complete the application form – registration statement –  exact address of residence in Greece (Region/Prefecture, Dimos/Municipality, Municipality area, Community, Street, Number, ZIP and phone number).

EU citizens who choose to vote in European Parliament elections in Greece must be informed, by the officials, that their details will be sent to the Ministry of the Interior to their home Member country, in order to avoid any possibility of double voting (Article 13 of Directive 93/109 / EC).                                                                                                                                                           Polling stations will be common with those of Greek voters.

The deadline for registration in the special electoral lists, in view of local elections and the European elections of 2019, ends 28th February, 2019.

As no one knows what is going to happen with Brexit – which happens on 29th March, 2019, and the fact that cut-off date to enrol is 28/02, it is suggested that you register, so as to make sure you will be able to take part if rulings allow.

The 28 member countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Denmark. U.K., Estonia, Greece, Cyprus, France, Ireland, Spain,  Latvia, Holland, Italy, Germany, Malta, Hungary, Luxembourg, Poland, Portugal, Lithuania, Rumania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden, Finland, Croatia, Czech Republic.
