Insects are plenty in Zakynthos and there seems to be one in particular that caught the interest of not only one of our members, Emma, who captured the little creature on camera, but caused an interest and a guessing game as to what it could be.
I must admit I was also captured by the weird amour type shell it seemed to have and as you can see in the picture it even looked like a walnut.
What is it?
Its scientific name is Brachycerus undatus, perfect name for a weird looking weevil and there is not much information about the little guy except that it is known as the onion or garlic weevil as this is where their larvae eat, within side the bulbs of the onion or garlic, whilst the adults consume all above ground parts of host plants.
so, maybe this little gut was looking for that perfect garlic or onion to feed on and had crossed many paths to try to get his destination when our friend Emma crossed its path. Let’s hope that the little guy wasn’t too hungry and that it doesn’t cause to much destruction on our famous Zakynthian water onions, as for our garlic well all I can say is there’s no wonder its on the lookout, Zakynthian garlic especially the purple type is known to be one of the best.
