Zakynthos 122 students & 32 teachers tested positive for coronavirus

• Particularly, an increased number of cases detected since Sunday night on our island!
• 15,547 students and teachers positive for the virus across the country

Ef. Angelousis:

“Children are more protected in the school environment, because it is more controlled.
All measures are observed, everyone wears masks and their attendance in a class room does not exceed 35-40 minutes. Then they go out for a break ”

D. Pothos:

“The Ministry sent us in addition to the self tests and 3,000 euros for heating oil, which we will distribute proportionally to the schools.
We also asked for another 3,350 self tests, which will be sent to us on Saturday through the School Committee “.

The number of cases detected since Sunday night in the educational community of our island was particularly high! Specifically, according to the data of the Primary and Secondary Directorates, a total of 122 students positive for the coronavirus were identified after a self-test. Of these, 89 attend Gymnasiums and Lyceums and 33 attend Primary and Kindergartens. Also, 12 professors and 20 teachers were found positive.
The Heads of Primary and Secondary stressed that the schools were opened with great care, while taking care to solve any problems that arose regarding the lack of self tests.
More specifically, the Head of Secondary Education, Dionysis Pothos, stressed that there is caution from parents and that the school environment is being controlled. “89 students and 12 teachers have fallen ill from Sunday night until Monday in the Secondary School. From Friday I was asking for an image in regards to teachers to see what will happen with the replacement for lessons. The schools, from the information we had, operated normally. There was no section closure. We had 89 cases, as it had been a while that self tests were done ”
The Head of Primary Education, Evangelos Aggelousis, said: “Parents are cautious, in the sense that those who have the opportunity, try to keep the children at home to see how things will develop. But what I have to say is that children are much more protected in a school environment that is more controlled. Because in the school environment all the hygiene measures are taken, but beyond that, everyone wears masks and the time spent in a class room does not exceed 35-40 minutes. “Then they go out for a break.”

The shortcomings in the self tests.

Regarding the issue of self tests, Mr. Pothos noted that stock had already been distributed to schools, so that the needs of those parents who had not been supplied in time by pharmacies were immediately covered. “Before our celebrations, the Ministry of Education with 700 self tests. We distributed these to the schools on Friday. Due to rain, some managers took them Saturday night and Sunday morning. The schools were supplied. We had informed the parents through My School not to go to the pharmacies on the last day. We told them to go by Friday, because we know that the weekend would be difficult to serve. We also had a teleconference on Friday with the Secretary General of the Ministry. In addition to the self tests, the Ministry sent us 3,000 euros for heating oil to the secondary schools, which we will distribute proportionally to the schools. We also asked him to send us other self tests to have stock. We asked for another 3,350, which will be sent to us by the Ministry through the school committee on Saturday “.

Recruitment and response to ELMEZ.

Finally, he noted that emergency recruitment is expected, while noting that there should be no concern for the situation, but cooperation and faithful observance of instructions and measures. “The Ministry will hire teachers for the coronavirus. That is, in the Secondary school there will be 10-20 teachers of different specialties, preferably “.
Regarding the announcement – complaint of ELMEZ regarding the lack of tests, he said: “I had informed both the local authorities and the Parents’ Association about what we have done so that the parents do not worry. I have a complaint from ELMEZ, because its president had to, before making the announcement, call me and ask for information, because it turned out that there was no problem in the schools “.

For his part, Mr. Angelousis stressed that the next period will be crucial to draw safe conclusions about the spread of the virus and cases in schools. “We will see how things develop during the week. The first week is the one that will give the most cases. Incidents should be reduced by the middle of next week, provided the school is safe. “Parents should do the self-tests on their children on the pre-arranged dates, in order to be checked and if a case is found, to be isolated”.

Self tests.

We remind you that for the first week of operation, until Friday, January 14, three self tests are scheduled, and from next week on January 17, the necessary self tests will be two per week, up to 24 hours before school, on Tuesday and on Friday.
As far as teachers are concerned, those who are not vaccinated are required to take 5 tests in 5 days: two rapid and one self test, in addition to the two rapid tests they already do per week.
It should be noted that unvaccinated students or teachers who have become ill within the last trimester have the same status as vaccinated students or teachers respectively.

Checks

In the event of an incident in the classroom, the whole department will be tested, and not just the students sitting close to the case, as has been the case so far. All unvaccinated students will have a free test every day for 5 days. Specifically, they will do two rapid and one self tests in five days, in addition to the two constant self tests per week, so 5 tests in 5 days. The vaccinated students will do a total of 3 self tests for free on those days.
It is noted that 50% + 1 is still valid for the suspension of department operation.

If a student or teacher is diagnosed as positive:

• If a student is diagnosed positive for coronavirus, then he or she will be isolated for at least 5 days. Isolation will be stopped after 5 days if there are no symptoms, or the symptoms after five days – prominent fever – subside, and with a negative self test. If the fever persists or there is a positive test (self or rapid), the isolation will be prolonged.
• If a teacher is diagnosed positive, then he will be isolated for at least 5 days. Isolation will be stopped after 5 days if there are no symptoms, or the symptoms subside after five days, and with a negative self test for vaccinated teachers, and a negative laboratory test (rapid or PCR) for unvaccinated teachers. If the fever persists or there is a positive test, the isolation will be prolonged. When leaving the quarantine, teachers are required to use a high respiratory protection mask (N95 or KN95 or FFP2) or a double mask for at least another 5 days.
