Zakynthos:- Alexander Roma street closed, open to “Pedestrians Only”

Closed until 8/1 : “We are moving towards a permanent walkway”

From today until January 8th , Alexander Roma street will operate as a pedestrian street, with a decision taken by the Municipality of Zakynthos, following the proposal of the Zakynthos Commercial Association and the Local City Council.

The president of the Municipal Council, Stavros Kakolyris, stated on the subject: “It was requested by the Commercial Association and the Local Council. It closes today from 7 in the morning until the 8th of January. This is what I have been saying all summer… The Commercial Association must help keep it a pedestrian only street. It was implemented by the new Board of Directors of the Commercial Association. The previous Board did not want to close the road. The new Commercial Association has the will and Alexandrou Roma has put on its festive spirti, our tree has been set up in Agios Markos square and the Christmas Park is in Solomos square, I believe that people will be in the mood to go to the market to shop and have fun”.

As for permanently making Alexander Roma a pedestrian only street,  Mr. Kakolyris stressed: “For a permanent pedestrian only street,  all have agreed and a relevant decision has been taken by the Board. Two studies have to be done in order to proceed and the protocols posted within the Government Gazette, the studies have to do with marking and regulatory of the street. We try within the New Year to move forward immediately. An update of the transport study needs to be made to make these two. I believe that our island must definitely have a pedestrian only street. It is inconceivable to be the only island without a pedestrian only street. Alexander Roma has become a parking lot for cars. I consider it important to have a pedestrian only street in the city centre and in fact in the shopping centre. We have closed it for two years based on the special legislation that was issued due to Covid. One year it was for six months and the next for three months. The Municipal Council has decided to permanently close Alexander Roma and 21st May Streets. So we are proceeding with the process of reviewing the transport study and we will send the studies to be reviewed “.
