One of the most high adrenaline activities that take place on our island is B.A.S.E jumping. The initials B.A.S.E come from the words; buildings, antennae (referring to radio masts), spans (bridges), and earth (cliffs). Nowadays, it is more generally written as BASE jumping.
In Zakynthos the element Earth attracts many base jumpers. Where else in the world would be the perfect place other than the “Navagio”, shipwreck cove. You only have to look at the picture to see why. The combination of the sport with the exotic beach Navagio, gives a unique spectacle to those who watch, but also to those who participate.
History.
The first time the extreme sport was organised was in 2011. An event that took place in August saw many BASE jumpers from around the world take part.
Navagio beach has become a meeting point for the sport fans and hosts the Summer BASE Jump Boogie event. This is where the best athletes of the world make more than 300 jumps in five days. The organisers again continued with jumps the following years since then. However, there haven’t been organised events over the last couple of years mainly due to covid 19. This year we saw a number of B.A.S.E jumpers trying their luck at the Navagio, once again.
Because the area is defined by huge vertical limestone cliffs and extraordinary scenery that alone attracts thousands of visitors every summer. BASE jumpers have found their own paradise. The jump off point is situated on the edge of a high cliff that overlooks the bay. At 656 ft/200 m height, once you jump, you have about 2 to 5 seconds before you deploy your parachute and land safely on the sandy beach.
This year we saw B.A.S.E jumpers gather and we were lucky to get Amie Williams from Wild Fig Retreat to give us an insight on what goes through the mind of a base jumper. Here’s her video.
