Zakynthos:- Castle waiting for restoration….

Zakynthos: The Venetian castle is waiting for its “rebirth”

The budget for the restoration of the buildings inside the castle amounts to 1.5 million euros, announces the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni – Aim to emerge again as a reference point of the island

The Venetian castle of Zakynthos, “hit” by the passage of time and earthquakes, haughtily awaits above the city of the island, in the area of Bochali, the attention of the institutions, is for it to be utilized and to emerge again, as a reference point for the whole the island.

This unique monument for Zakynthos, is just 2 km from the city of the island, in an area that is a “natural” balcony offering panoramic views of the city.

During her recent trip to Zakynthos, the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, made a special reference to the castle of Zakynthos, a fact that caused great surprise but also joy to the inhabitants of the island.

Thus, according to the minister, a “contract for the maturation of studies for the castle of Zakynthos has been planned for fixing and highlighting the fortification and its buildings, which is supplemented by resources of the Public Investment Program of the Ministry of Culture, in order to ensure timely and complete work restoration of buildings inside the Castle, a budget of 1,500,000 euros, which has been included in the Cultural Routes planned and included by the Ministry of Culture in the Recovery Fund. The Castle is a very important cultural resource and an equally important tourist pole for Zakynthos “.

The problems of the Castle

Urgent and absolutely necessary are the interventions in the Venetian Castle of Bochali and more specifically, in the Minotto bastion which after the earthquake of October 26, 2018, faces the risk of landslides with what this implies in principle for public safety and of course for the Monument.

After the winter of 2016 when the floods hit the island, landslides and instabilities were created in the Castle and after a few months of waiting, a restoration and support project for part of the slopes followed.
