Zakynthos:- Earthquake drill planned for Zakynthos for the very first time!

In the framework of the actions of the Act “Telemachos – Innovative Operational System of Seismic Risk Management of the Ionian Islands Region, the Department of Civil Protection of the Regional Unit, Zakynthos in collaboration with OASP, will hold on Monday, November 29th at 9.00 am, an earthquake preparedness exercise in the building of the Regional Unit of Zakynthos.

First time in the region of Zakynthos will our Regional unit prepare an “earthquake drill”

In a statement by our Governor, Mr Katerina Mothonaiou explaining that our Regional Offices will, for the first time commence “earthquake drills” within the building and for those who are working or visiting within the building” She also stressed that because we are having a drill that does not mean that there is any indication of a possible earthquake threat and that the drill is within the plans and actions of the Regional Unit.  The exercise will commence Monday 29th of November at 09.00a.m. The exercise will try and re enact an actual event where an alarm will sound giving the warning for safety measures to be applied.  The reason for this is to counter act any problems that may be faced so that our authorities can solve them in readiness for a possible actual event.

During the drill the emergency services will take part, police, port police, fire department, special task forces for emergency services, volunteers for civil protection and the Red Cross. The idea is to see if these services are able to reach the Regional Offices in case of an emergency. Also if they face any problems how these problems will be solved.

As far as the building goes, workers and the people who are visiting at the time, it will be up to each Director to organise the area he is in charge of so that he can lead workers and visitors to safety, which will have been designated.

Areas that are regarded safe areas for gathering are Saint Marco and Dionysios Solomos squares. However, the Regional Offices have chosen for the exercise the closest area of Saint Marcos square.

During the meeting Ms. Maria Mouzaki, head of the civil Protection unit of Zakynthos mentioned that the exercise will start with a siren sounding for 30 seconds. This will be the signal that employees must act according to their training. As soon as the siren stops the commencement of emergency services will begin.

The plan for citizens safety areas has been given by our council in which was organised by the Kapodistra University with well known seismologists Mr Lekkas taking part in the plans. Within the plan it shows all the safe areas around Zakynthos for people to gather in emergency situations. It also has a detailed plan on how to escape town in an emergency situation as well. All our authorities have been notified of the plan and thus will be put into action this Monday.
