Just a stone’s throw away from the town’s centre is the small village church of Saint Nicholoas in Ambelokipi. The Saint Nicholaos Parish, every year has its own unique service during the Holy week. The Highlight of the week is of course Holy Friday where the well known “moiroloi tis Panagias” (lament) is sung. The lament, according to tradition is sung only by women. The atmosphere is truly in mourning mode as the parish Priest reads the sermon and the choir sings the Hyms. It is certainly a place to visit if you would like to listen or be a part of a true Zakynthian Tradition.

Distribution of Palm crosses will be given and palm decorations can be obtained after the service.
7:30 p.m. “Behold the Bridegroom Cometh in the Midst of the Night…”
(The service is MATINS3 [Morning Prayers] of Great Monday and is sung by anticipation on Palm Sunday evening.)

8:15 p.m. Procession of the Bride ( Troparion/ Hymn of Kassiani ) *The Troparion of Kassiani will be performed by the choir of KOURKOUMELIS KOTHRIS of Holy Monastery of .Agios Dionysios. This sermon is one of the highlights of our Holy week.

20.00 pm Evening Service. the Holy Apostles and the Sacred Gospels to celebrate four Events: the washing of the disciples’ feet, the institution of the Holy Eucharist, the Marvelous Prayer, the betrayal.

08.30am Vespers & Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great (Commemoration of the Tradition of the Mystery of the Eucharist).
19.00 p.m. Sequence of the Holy Passions
* After the end of the Procession of the Passions, the epitaph will be decorated with a treat appropriate to the day
GOOD FRIDAY 14- 4- 2023
8.30am The Sequence of Great Times
10.30am Great Vespers The Vespers of Friday afternoon are a continuation of the Royal Hours. During this service, the removal of the Body of Christ from the Cross is commemorated with a sense of mourning for the terrible events which took place. Once more, excerpts from the Old Testament are read together with hymns, and again the entire story is related, followed by the removal from the Cross and the wrapping of the Body of Christ with a white sheet as did Joseph of Arimathea. Apostle Paul, interpreting the dreadful event, exhorts the Church:
7:30 p.m. Epitaphios . The Lamentation
It is here that the women’s choir “Rodambelos” along with the children’s choir “Rodakia” will perform the unique lament of “Panagia”. It is the only one of its kind across Zakynthos and is only sung at this church. After the service the epitaph will be taken around the Holy church grounds.
GREAT SATURDAY 15 – 4 – 2023
08.30am Vespers & Divine Liturgy of St. Basil the Great (first resurrection)
23.20 p.m. Services begin
11.45pm ‘receiving the Holy Light’
24:00 Christ is Risen (Easter eggs are offered as a blessing) and then the Easter Liturgy begins.
