Zakynthos:- Free WiFi areas, 5 in total with more to come.

The residents and visitors of Zakynthos now have the possibility of free internet access in five places, with the completion of the required projects by the Municipality of Zakynthos.

As Mayor Nikitas Aretakis states in the announcement he issued:

“The Municipality of Zakynthos, prioritizing new technologies for the benefit of the citizen, proceeded to install and provide free and high Wi-Fi connectivity in central parts of Zakynthos for 3 years, based on the implementation of the action of the European Program “WiFi4EU – Promotion of Internet connectivity in local communities”, in the framework of the “CONNECTING EUROPE (CEF) – WiFi4EU” mechanism.

This is an initiative of the European Commission, which concerns the support of Municipalities when installing WiFi wireless access points in centers of public life, covering central points of gathering of citizens and visitors, buildings of public interest, to facilitate citizens in their dealings with municipal services and tourist information points for visitors.

For the operation of the wireless network, the Municipality of Zakynthos, as the beneficiary of the project, secured funding for the supply and installation of the required equipment, €15,000.

Thus, using the funding of the European WiFi4EU program, completion the installation of wireless Internet access points was made.

By using WiFi technology devices such as mobile phones, laptops and tablets, citizens and visitors can now freely connect to the Internet in the following areas:

ZAKYNTHOS TOWN

SOLOMON SQUARE

COLUMN OF THE FALLEN (OPPOSITE SOLOMOS SQUARE)

BEHIND THE COMMUNITY CENTER (RED ROCK)

AGIOS DIONYSIOS SQUARE

VILLAGE AREA.

At these points, users can connect with the network name (SSID) WiFi4EU, then select “Login” on the initial access screen and can freely use Internet services.

It is noted that in the next 3 months, 9 more wireless access points will be evaluated through the funded program “Wifi4GR-Development of Public Wireless Broadband Internet Access Points” in areas of touristic, cultural interest and public gathering places”.
