Zakynthos:- October 28th, National OXI day, with no parade. (VIDEO)

Zakynthos celebrates today, October 28th, without a parade.

Much to many disappointed children and parents, the parade was cancelled at the last minute. The notification that was sent to parents around 23.00p.m Wednesday night read:-

CANCELLATION OF THE PARADE OCTOBER 28.

Our Dear Parents,

We would like to inform you that with the change of the epidemiological map and the inclusion of Zakynthos in the red level, tomorrow’s parade for the celebration of the 28th of October is canceled.
Only the flag bearers will be present tomorrow at 10.15 am at the Diocese, for the doxology and then for the laying of wreaths at the Hero of the Fallen.
The use of a mask will be mandatory.

The increase in cases of coronavirus over the last few days has caused Zakynthos to enter the “red” zone on the epidemiological map. For this reason the parade to honour our fallen was canceled. The rest of the celebration followed as programmed.

Late last night the Regional Governor of the Ionian Islands convened an extraordinary meeting in which the Deputy Regional Governor of Zakynthos Ms. Aikaterini Mothoneou, the Deputy Mayor of Education of the Municipality of Zakynthos Mr. Nikitas Spinos, the Head of Secondary Education Mr. Dionysios Pothos and the Head of Primary Education Mr. Evangelos Aggelous. where it was decided to cancel the parade on the island to avoid possible dispersal of covid-19.

An Official Festive Doxology took place at the Holy Metropolitan Church.

A speech was delivered by Alexandra Katsaitou, Head of School Activities of the Directorate of Primary Education of Zakynthos.

At 11:00 a.m. A memorial prayer was held and wreaths were laid at the Hero of the Fallen memorial by our Authorities, the security forces and other authorities according to the established order.

Wishes of unity and prosperity were given by our local MP, Mr Dionysios Aktypis.

The national anniversary of October 28, a day of remembrance and pride, has a special value for all Greeks.
The majestic NO to fascism and Nazism will forever remind the Greek people of their passion for territorial integrity and national independence.
The epic in 1940 is still a source of inspiration for all of us, because through it the greatness of the Greek soul emerged.
So, we all have a duty on this occasion to honor the dead and the heroes of the ’40s, putting aside any discord. Because only together can we face any threat to our nation.

Whilst, the Governor of Zakynthos, Ms Aikaterini Mothoneou aslo sent wishes.  However, both emphasising the fact that at this particular time Zakynthos should be taking the coronavirus measures seriously and that vaccination is our only weapon against the virus.
