One of Albania’s most wanted drug dealers was surrendered to police Tuesday morning after a three year manhunt, Interior Minister Santer Liesay announced today.
Klemet Balili escaped in May 2016, largely thanks to his support network and his alleged political interconnections. In February 2017, Tirana’s pressure from their Western allies forced the government to convene the Security Council and prioritize the capture of Bali, as its action had been extended to Greece and other member countries of NATO.
The Interior Minister told reporters that Bali’s arrest means that the Albanian police, which had organized more than twelve failed businesses to locate and arrest him, made a “historic jump”, overcoming its failures in capturing the leaders of the organized crime.
“His delivery was the result of a large and complex enterprise in cooperation with the Albanian partners,” he said.
When asked what Bailli received to be delivered, Lissai replied: “The assurance that he will have a fair trial.”
Balii denies the accusations he is accused of. Among other things, the Greek police, in collaboration with the American DEA, accuse him of importing 700 kilograms of cannabis into Greece.
Former US ambassador to Tirana Donald Lou had pressed Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama to ask Bali to be arrested before his replacement came to the country. 44-year-old Albanian Klemet Bali is accused by the Greek authorities of being a leader and a financier of a criminal organization that trades in Europe – through our country – huge quantities of drugs.
Although the Greek and Albanian press has described him as “Escobar of the Balkans,” he was officially charged with “the case of Zakynthos”, as it became known. The Greek Police has issued an arrest warrant against him and has asked the Albanian authorities for his extradition to our country, as research has revealed data that involved him in the handling of about 700 kilos of raw cannabis with a high speed craft, origination from Agio Saranta to the Ionian island.
