35th European Athletics Indoor Championship 2019

The performance of the Greek athletes, at the European indoor championship held in Glasgow from  1st to 3rd March, gave the Greeks a reason to be proud and to smile.

GOLD MEDAL

Making this years best performance in the world, Miltos (Miltiadis) Tentoglou made history, once again, for Greece, conquering first place and the gold medal in the long jump.                                                                                                                                                                                                            The 20-year-old Greek athlete jumped 8.38 metres in his 5th attempt and celebrated moving into first position to win his second consecutive gold medal, after the European open track at Berlin. Tentoglou was on a great day and made two jumps over 8 metres, with the 4th being just one millimetre under that of the leading one, at that moment, Swede Nilsson. In his next attempt, however, the Greek champion made the top performance of all times for Greece, in a closed European championship, to win the gold medal.

SILVER X 2

Greeces first medal in the championship came from Kostas Baniotis, who with his incredible appearance in the final of the high jump, won his first medal in a big event in his 4th participation in a final.                                                                                            The 32-year-old athlete from Komotini started his attempt from 2.18 metres that he passed with his first attempt. On his second attempt, he passed with 2.22 metres and the third attempt, of the 2.26, gave him the silver medal. Kostas then had a try at 2.29 metres, where his attempt was void so he left it. He then tried, twice, at 2.32 metres but failed to pass.

The second silver medal –

Making an individual record from her first attempt, Voula (Paraskevi) Papachristou “touched” another gold medal, but the Spanish Peletiero then “took off” with a games record, leaving the Greek athlete in second place.  Papachristou made 14.50 metres in her first and best jump but she had to overcome herself again, as her opponent was on a fantastic day and made two leaps over her own, one of which at 14.73. The Greek gold medalist in the European open track in 2018, however, failed to jump even further, so it was second place and the silver medal.

BRONZE

Greece took another medal on the 3rd and last day of the championships, with Nicole Kyriakopoulos in the pole vault, while Katerina Stephanidis was out of the medals, for the first time in many years (Beijing 2015 in 2015), where she starred in all major events and failed to defend her title.

Kyriakopoulos won the bronze medal in the final of the competition with 4.65m, her first in the event and gave Greece its 33rd medal, overall, in the championship.                                                                                                                                                             Stephanides, the Olympic-gold winner, world and European champion, was not having a good day, failed to exceed 4.75m and completed her attempt with 4.65m, staying off the podium.
