Turtles die from propellor injuries in Laganas

It’s been reported by ARCHELON, that a female loggerhead turtle was found dead on 01 July in the area of Agios Sostis. The turtle had been hit by a boat propellor and it’s thought this was the reason for its death. On 03 July, another sea turtle was discovered alive in Laganas Bay, but in a weak condition. This turtle had also been hit by a boat propellor. Sadly despite being rescued and treated this second turtle also died from its injuries.

This is sad news for us all, but especially for those volunteers such as ARCHELON who work incredibly hard to protect these wonderful creatures. The situation of death by boat propeller is not a new one, and many have been fighting hard to inform, educate and prevent these types of injuries and deaths to Zakynthos turtles.

Sadly, however, this issue is still happening. It’s tragic not only for the turtles but the volunteers. There are rules to protect the turtles and to prevent tour operators and visitors from getting too close. These rules are being ignored, and turtles are still getting injured and dying.

ARCHELON has released a news report on this issue:
