Zakynthos has been give the “Jaws of Life”

Early this evening the special equipment “jaws of life” was handed over to the Zakynthos Fire Department.  A small and breif event with the firemen giving the representatives from the volunteer groups a small demonstration on how the tool operates.

This special tool is a hydraulic spreader-cutter, which operates quieter, faster, stronger, and is more versatile: they can cut, open, and even lift a vehicle.

Thanks to the Rotary Foundation of Greece, Members of the English speaking Rotary satelite club of Zakynthos, Zakynthos Informer, the Volunteer Group of Zakynthos and the Ionian Echeo of whom all members came together to buy the eight thousand euro tool and offered it as a gift to our local fire department.

Penny Draper, the president of the English speaking Rotary Satelite club of Zakynthos who’s idea it was and part organiser of the whole project said:-

I would like to thank the Rotary Foundation of Greece, all members of the English spreaking Rotary Satelite club, President Ioanna Tousi and the Rotary club of Zakynthos members and their friends.

The Zakynthos Informer, The Volunteer Group of Zakynthos and the Ionian Echo.

All participants of the social coffee club weekly fundraisers.

Thanks to individuals who arranged raffles and other events, special mentions to Tricia Cook, Rhiannon Lewis, Hapi McNaughton, Naomi and Julian Rodgers, Loes Blokzijl,  Liza Collaros and Dan Norman.

The Response and generosity of people has been overwhelming and many from whom do not live on the Island but just love Zakynthos. There are just too many to thank personally but our gratitude is heartfelt to each and everyone who contributed to this amazing project whether by promoting the project or donating how ever small…. Every bit helped to get what we see today.. I thank you all from the bottom of my heart. Well Done!!!

As for the “Jaws of Life”, we suggested to the fire department that they name the tool “Penny”. We hope that “Penny” will not be needed but it certainly is reassuring that if “Penny” is needed,  she will most certainly be more powerful to act quickly, ensuring that every single moment is focused on saving a life.

Zakynthos Informer would like to thank all members who contributed towards one of the most important donations for our Island.
