A meeting with the Professor E. Lekka and the Hoteliers Association regarding the Shipwreck and earthquakes

The prevention, being prepared and the protection of visitors to Zakynthos was the subject of the meeting held by the representatives of the hoteliers of the island with the Professor of Geology and President of  the Organization of Earthquake Protection and Planning unit Mr Efthimios Lekka.

In the debate it was clear once again that Zakynthos was able to withstand the earthquake of 6.8 last October and that there is no reason to worry about the safety of tourists and residents.

The main axes of the discussion were three, dealing with the management of the Shipwreck problem, the rumours of an imminent earthquake, the safety of tourists and the hospitality infrastructure.

More specifically, in the case of the Navagio “shipwreck”, Mr. Lekkas suggested and the hoteliers agreed,  stressing the need to protect the unique tourist trademark of Zakynthos. The goal, as it has been pointed out, is to become a world-class model, since interventions are absolutely necessary both on the beach and on the land (rock area).

For the land section, there should be delineated secure access points, information signs and fences, a bridge and a viewpoint of the shipwreck, toilets, guards, first-aid facilities and kiosks that sell traditional products.

For the beach; to study and delineate the marine space for the safety of bathers, precise capacity calculation and time-limitation, boat mooring points, lifeguards and guards.

To this end, the representatives of the hoteliers held a meeting with the Port Lieutenant General of Zakynthos. Athanasios Siouti, who informed them that lifting the ban, can be done only if he receives from another authority, for example the Municipality or Regional Offices should have a complete study and application of which allows and proves that access to the shipwreck is safe. To this end, hoteliers will be given an initiative to communicate with the authorities for the delimitation of responsibilities and responsibility for actions.

Regarding the rumours of a major imminent earthquake, Mr Lekkas made it clear that these are arbitrary predictions, as there is no evidence to suggest a major new earthquake. In fact, he pointed out that a public prosecutor’s office would be come down hard on those who shed such rumours.

Lastly, regarding the safety of tourists and the hospitality infrastructure, Mr. Lekkas will draw up a memorandum with the actions and obligations that the hoteliers will have to take, which will include, among other things, study and examination of each hotel separately by a team of specialists, which will update and specify the reaction plans and evacuation of hotels in the event of an earthquake (routes, safe meeting points, etc.).

It was also decided to make substantial updates for visitors as well, thus to conduct an organized drill and response exercises with the participation of tourists for both earthquake and tsunami.
