Just how old are these showers?
Named after constellation Lyra, the Lyrids are one of the oldest recorded meteor shower.
According to some historical Chinese texts, the shower was seen over 2,500 years ago. The fireballs in the meteor shower are created by debris from comet Thatcher, which takes about 415 years to orbit around the Sun. The comet is expected to be visible from Earth again in 2276.
So you star gazers, tonight’s sky should impress you all. The Lyrids have a steep approach to the Earth, with a radiant declination located in the northern hemisphere at +32 degrees north. Their oncoming medium to swift velocity is 48 kilometers per second, fast as meteor showers go, about 25 percent of Lyrid meteors are fireballs leaving persistent trains, worth keeping binoculars handy for.
