Archbishop Demetrios of America submitted his resignation to the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in on Saturday. Demetrios traveled to Fanari, the seat of the Ecumenical Ptriarch in Istanbul, following an invitation by the latter.
Dmetrios resignation was an expected development as Bartholoew had reportedly asked him already twice to resign.
The 90-year-old Archbishop of America had refused to obey the Patriarch’s calls, and had preposterously asked Bartholomew to remain on his post until after the Greek Orthodox Easter.
One of the reasons for Demetrios removal was the unprecedented financial crisis in the Archdiocese of America as well as delays and possible financial mismanagement in the construction of Agios Nikolaos Church at the World Trade Center in New York. The church was destroyed during the 9/11 attacks in 2001.
Archbishop Demetrios had proceed to economic measures to rescue the Archdiocese by reducing personnel by 25% and a equal rate in the operating cost.
Demetrios was holding the position of the Archbishop of America since 1999.
The Holy Synod is expected to elect Demetrios’ successor on May 9.
According to Greek media, favorite candidates for the Archdiocese of America is Bishop of France Emmanuil and Bishop of Proussa Elpidoforos.
