“Champions” in traffic accidents

The first “negative” five, with 6.24% between the areas with the most traffic accidents, is completed with Zakynthos according to data from the Association of Insurance Companies of Greece.

The first of them, as is natural because of the very high number of vehicles that are in circulation, is held by the prefecture of Attica with a damage frequency of 8.36%. Second place is the region of Achaia with 7.03%, followed by Thessaloniki and Heraklion with 6.74% and 6.68% respectively.

The wider region of Crete, however, appears again in the data of the Association of Insurance Companies of Greece, with another prefecture, Chania (5.89%). Ioannina also has a high accident index, while the first 10 includes Rethymno, Chios and Evia.

On the other end of the list, the prefecture with the fewest accidents is the prefecture of Samos with a damage frequency of 3.16%, followed by the prefecture of Lesbos with 3.74% and the prefecture of Evros with 3.79%. It is worth noting that the overwhelming majority of accidents involve private vehicles followed by professional and motorcycles.

The Greek Statistical Authority announced the results for road traffic accidents with bodily harm, for the year 2017, as well as their evolution during the 2008-2017 decade. In the year 2017, 10,848 road traffic accidents occurred across the country, which resulted in the death or injury of individuals, showing a decrease of 4.2% compared to 2016 which had 11,318 accidents.
