Clean up after fire at Recycling Centre.

A clean operation took place over the last few days after the fire that broke out at the recycling plant. It was noticed that staff also helped in the operation.

On arson

The workers – as well as the majority of the island’s political staff, according to statements so far – and Zakynthians, in their vast majority, are convinced that it is arson and not natural causes. Of course, the task of investigating whether it was arson or not has been taken by the competent services and authorities and treated as a priority, so making further cases on the basis of ‘cui bono’ makes no sense.

The facts

• The timing: Saturday night, the guard at the door of the Biological Clearing House had left his post, which was at the entrance of the facility. At the same time the changing of the guards for their shift took place at FODSA. During that time the ceremony of the oath of office for the new municipal authority took place in Solomos Square.
• The site: The back of the facility adjacent to the Biological building
• Damage: In recyclable materials both bundled (ie ready for sale) and not off site but also in the old bale press and electrical installation. Also parts of the roof have collapsed. The fire also destroyed the toilet on the upper floor where the offices are located, but did not go any further.
• The material which was burnt consisted of mainly petroleum products – nylon and plastic is extremely flammable. Therefore, if it were not for the immediate intervention of the Fire Brigade the fire would have been ripped through the facility.

The announcement of Zakynthos Solid Waste Management Association

On Saturday, August 31, 2019, at around 9pm in the backyard of the Recyclable Materials Screening Center (CDDC), a fire broke out in select recyclable materials (baled and non baled).
With the intervention of the fire department, machinery of the management centre and the municipality the fire was limited and extinguished in a timely manner.
Only material damage was caused to recyclable materials, to the old link baler press and to an electrical installation.
The competent departments shall carry out what is required to determine the cause of the fire. In any case, however, if the causes are not natural, the day, time and location of the outbreak are elements of concern for the administration of the Association.
Throughout the summer season there has been and is a vigilant, continuous effort to guard and protect the premises of the Association.

We must strongly and categorically deny that the Association’s archive material was burned at the premises of the Recycling Plant, firstly because the administrative and financial services of the centre are not located in the recycling plant. Secondly, that the fire never reached the office premises. As a result, those who wrote ignorant thoughts on social media and journalists in the media are utterly insulting and slanderous.
The outgoing administration of the Association has been in daily contact with the new Municipal Authority in recent months to address all waste management issues, particularly pending issues.

Over the past four years the Association and its staff have been dealing with the most adverse conditions (limited as no funding, severe staff shortages, etc.) on serious issues such as the timely installation and operation of the temporary waste management unit, integration – financing – the announcement of the project for the new modern plant, the reconstruction of the recycling plant, the significant increase in the recycling rate (especially in recent months), the response to issues of cleanliness and of waste disposal. We believe that the local community has not been clearly informed and in every detail of these actions, the magnitude of the effort and especially the adverse conditions where they have taken place.
