Competition is causing problems in tourism and Tour Operators “tighten” their belts!

The reduction of sales has brought a crisis to the tourist market and for a few weeks the concern has been nestled in the minds of many local hoteliers.

According to reliable information, a large tour operator had advised many hoteliers – customers last month, which their contracts will be adjusted, with an average decrease of 20% and in some cases the contracts made under the guaranteed lease will be replaced with allotment contracts.

Reduced prices and limitation of guarantees to local hoteliers

This development has alarmed hoteliers as some of them claim to have borrowed to build new units that may not have the necessary occupancy in the summer.

The other unpleasant development is the withdrawal of a large Polish Tour operator from Zakynthos, leaving behind many problems to some hoteliers.

In any case, these problems highlight a different environment for large hotels that are directly dependent on Tour Operators and are almost bound to follow their central choices.

Thus, based on the estimates of the international market, pressure will be put on Greek hoteliers to adjust their prices to lower levels in order to face the competition caused by the very low prices of Turkey and the North African countries. This pressure is inevitable due to international developments that do not favor Greek tourism in the past.

Thomas Cook and TUI fall in England

The two major tour operators Thomas Cook and TUI are losing their share in the UK travel market this year, according to a Morgan Stanley survey.

The survey (fourth yearly), based on British reservation intentions for the summer season, found that Thomas Cook still has the highest market share, but this has dropped significantly since last year. This year, the percentage of respondents who have closed or are likely to close a holiday with Thomas Cook was 36%, compared to 43% last year, while with TUI the figure is 35%, from 38% last year.

The Growth cycle closing

It is a real pity to see the virtuous circle of 2013 – 2018 development of Greek tourism that so supported the country to close due to the short-sighted policy of extreme overcrowding, says in a statement through twitter former SETE president Andreas Andreadis, commenting on an article in Kathimerini with “Stagnation due to taxes”.

The article refers to the SETE data, which shows that tourist Greece is up to 8 percentage points more expensive than its competitors, underlining that no one deals with the essence of the market that the prices we “sell” Greece are decreasing.
