Greek authorities arrest Bulgarian national for babies trafficking

Authorities in Northern Greece have arrested a Bulgarian citizen for trafficking babies. The 38-year-old man was arrested while he was trying to return to Bulgaria although arrest warrants were issued there as well.

According to media, the man would find poor mothers in Bulgaria, offered them a price and bring them to Katerini, West Macedonia, where they would give birth.

He would then remove the babies from the mothers and offer them to adoptions for €6,000 to €8,000 per child.

According to authorities, the man was involved in at least 13 cases of illegal adoptions that took place between October 2013 and March 2015.

In 2016, authorities in Katerini, smashed the ring trafficking the babies, arresting four men and tow women, all Bulgarian nationals. Ever since, the man whom authorities believe that he was the leader of the group, was on the run.

He was reportedly hiding in Greece for the last three years.

He was arrested on Saturday by border guards when he tried to leave Greece to return to his home country. Checking his papers, Customs authorities found out that there was a warrant against him issued by the prosecutor’s office in Katerini.
