Coronavirus:- Lockdown, when will schools open?

In the next few hours, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will make the final decision on the opening of the schools – First he will listen to the suggestions from the infectious disease specialists

With the prevailing scenario, the opening of schools to take place after the Christmas and New Year holidays, ie on January 7th, the Committee of Infectious Diseases is meeting at this time, which will then inform the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis. Infectious disease specialists are very careful about the gradual lifting of the lockdown measures, as in no case should any lost ground be lost in the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.

As everything shows, scientists as a whole are reluctant to open all school units, regardless of level, something that also applies to primary schools. After all, the prime minister seems to be moving in the same direction, saying that “we will keep the schools closed for as long as the experts tell us”. A similar position was taken by the Minister of Education, Niki Kerameos, who underlined that “the opening of the schools will come when we get the green light from the experts”.

The same position is held by scientists, such as Mr. Haralambos Gogos, professor of pathology and member of the committee of experts of the Ministry of Health, who argued that with the current data, High schools and Senior High will probably open after the holidays, while such a thing may be done with primary schools as well. What “plays” is whether they will start on the 14th. If elementary school does not start on the 14th, it does not make sense to discuss it. Therefore, there is a possibility that they will go after the holidays “.

A similar request is made by the teachers, who through the Federation ask them to open the schools after the holidays and even with additional protection measures and having solved any problem related to e-learning, so that we do not mourn other victims in the field of the education community. Earlier today, the teacher’s federation ,OLME was asked to meet with Education Minister Niki Kerameos, but the minister did not accept the request and the delegation left.

Teachers want the schools to be opened, but with additional measures, as they already say, many teachers have lost their lives or are being treated in serious condition. In fact, 5,000 cases have already been reported in schools, up to the age of 17, and 1,000 schools have been closed due to an outbreak. Teachers have one more reason to worry given that 72.68% of teachers are over 50 years old and specifically those born from 1969 and earlier total to  42,672.

What Stelios Petsas said about the opening of the schools.

Following today’s announcements by government spokesman Stelios Petsas, to extend the lockdown until December 14, it seems that the opening of schools is moving further and further away.

Stelios Petsas did not give answers for the opening of the schools and recommended a little more patience as any decision will be taken after the suggestions of the experts. “You have to be a little patient for the individual activities. “Only the seasonal stores will open, the relevant details will be known tomorrow by Mr. Stampoulidis”, he stated characteristically.
