Coronavirus: New Year’s Eve and Epiphany lead to new lockdown – What worries experts

Lockdown Christmas and New Year in words and today’s images, combined with the government’s intention to open activities, may bring a “padlock” again soon.
The images of crowds outside the churches but also inside them as happened in the Holy Diocese of Hania the Epiphany, the throwing of the Cross – despite the ban of the Permanent Holy Synod for sanctification of the waters – in combination with the fact that even today despite the lockdown Coronavirus cases are quite high, they are the ones that cause concern for the virus pandemic in our country after the holidays.

It is no coincidence that several infectious disease specialists and doctors already emphasize that the next 15 days are especially crucial with the removal of the lockdown. It is now certain that experts are taking for granted the resurgence of the coronavirus pandemic at a time when images of crowds in the country’s churches celebrating Epiphany are circulating on the Internet and have sparked new rivalries between government and official opposition, with the government representative, Christos Tarantilis, in fact, to ask Alexis Tsipras to answer if he finally wanted to close the churches with the use of force the Epiphany.

However, according to the data of the coronavirus in our country, only in the first five days of January, a total of 213 people died. Already the data on the viral load in the wastewater of Attica announced by the Department of Chemistry of the University of Athens show that January will be quite difficult. Experts found that the load on sewage doubled at Christmas and tripled on New Year’s Eve. This means that based on the findings in the sewage, the increase in coronavirus cases will begin to be reflected from next week in the daily number of cases, leading to a new resurgence of coronavirus in the basin.

1/3 of the coronavirus cases announced on January 5 were recorded in Attica (326), however the spread in yesterday’s epidemiological bulletin was large, as there were 44 regional units with positive coronavirus cases. In fact, among them there were seven islands with what this means for the management of incidents and the reflexes of the health services in case a patient needs hospitalization – transportation or air transportation with a special capsule and great operational readiness.

The distribution in Attica shows that the targeted restrictive measures in West Attica have paid off as the region now records a small number of cases – yesterday it had 33 positive cases as much as the southern sector of Athens. On the contrary, the central sector of Athens with 75 positive cases, the western sector with 57, Eastern Attica with 53 cases show the increased mobility of the coronavirus and obviously of the population.

Scientists are worried

However, according to the president of the Association of Hospital Doctors of Attica-Piraeus, Matina Pagoni, who spoke to Real Fm (Thessaloniki) 107.1 today or tomorrow we will have a picture of the imprint of mobility that occurred at Christmas and on the 10-11th of the month the “image” of the New Year will be recorded. However, Mrs. Pagoni expressed her objections to the opening of the churches. “We have to do what we have to do and not what we want,” he said, referring to people who have died or become ill but also to health workers who are fighting to save lives. “The laws must be observed”, noted the president of EINAP, commenting on the decision of the Permanent Holy Synod of the Church of Greece.

The images of crowds in the churches are worrying

At a similar wavelength is the president of the Panhellenic Medical Association, Athanasios Exadaktylos, who, speaking to SKAI, described the images from the churches as very worrying. Mr. Exadaktylos stressed that “we are not at a point where we are allowed to feel that the danger is gone. We are in a very dangerous place. We have to be very careful to return to a partial normalcy.

More strict and with ominous predictions, however, appeared the professor of Genetics, Manolis Dermitzakis, who commented in a negative way on the images of crowds in the Church of the Diocese of Piraeus. “After that, no one should wonder why Greece will be in strict measures and lockdown for a long time, and maybe with closed schools again soon. “It’s a pity,” he said on Facebook.

Alkiviadis Vatopoulos, professor of Microbiology at the School of Public Administration of the University of West Attica, speaking to MEGA “does not need to complain” and added that “everyone should take care of themselves and the state collectively. We have the vaccine, with the difficulties that have arisen, but there is light at the end of the tunnel and it takes a little patience,

Referring to the celebration of the Epiphany, he said: “The issue of the Epiphany was not raised in the committee. My feeling was that what happened at Christmas and New Year would happen at the Epiphany. Our position is known, there should be no overcrowding. And the church needs to look at the issue a little bit more broadly. The government made a decision, the issue was not discussed in the committee, it is good that things do not polarize
