• About 50 active cases on our island
• 7 are being treated in the COVID clinic and one is in the ICU
• Ath. Markou: “We see an increase in coronavirus transmission”
The epidemiological data on our island lately has been causing obvious concern. Despite the relative reduction in the number of coronavirus cases in recent days, the picture for Zakynthos remains poor. With active cases just over 50, experts warn that we should all be extra careful.
“Things are not very good lately because the picture from the epidemiological data is bad. Despite the decrease in cases in the last few days , the number of positive cases as a whole has increased. There are about 65 cases in February and around 100 since January. “says the chairman of the Infections Committee, chairman of the Scientific Council and vice-chairman of the Medical Association Athanasios Markou .
In fact, Mr. Markou then stressed that the data are not good, while there is an increase in cases at younger ages, in contrast to what was happening in the past, where the cases were in older citizens.
“What is particularly worrying beyond the quantitative data is some individual features. We have seen that we have an increase in the contagion of the virus. We have an increase in age and we have an increased incidence of children. From what we observe, the hospitalization time for the most serious cases has increased “.
The chairman of the Infection Committee noted that patience and more time are needed to see when the cases will be reduced. Around the end of February, there is probably no safer picture of the situation.
“And a month ago we did not expect this increase in cases. It is dangerous to say something. It is also a period that favours the spread of viruses. If we did not have a coronavirus, the incidence of the flu would have increased. We hope that in the next period the increase will not be dramatic and we hope that it will be as smooth as possible. In active cases 10% are hospitalized. The percentage is not small. “Apart from the ICU, the patients in the clinic are under control.”
Mr Markou reported that 7 patients are in the COVID clinic of the Hospital, while one of our fellow citizens is in the negative pressure ward of the Intensive Care Unit. In fact, Mr. Markou noted that the active cases exceed 50 at the moment and it is definitely a large number for our island.
“We are expanding
the COVID clinic in the Hospital”
A very important development concerns the expansion of the COVID clinic at the General Hospital of Zakynthos. Due to the incidents related to the virus, the area needs to be enlarged and the situation properly addressed.
“At the Hospital we will expand the coronavirus clinic. Beds will increase. We had set a limit of 8 incidents. If 8 are treated, the clinic could not serve others “Now that we have reached a large number, we are starting the process of its expansion,”
Mr. Markou told “Imera” also responded to the cases that occurred to hospital staff, after they returned to their normal duties after quarantine. while they also passed all the required controls.
“We had a number of cases in hospital staff, which has nothing to do with its operation. The virus came from outside and all the necessary checks were made on the premises and the related staff. We did not find anything special with the tests that were done. The staff has already returned to work. They were quarantined, the time passed and everything was fine “.
Once again, Mr. Markou pointed out that all citizens should be very careful and observe the measures of personal protection, wearing a mask, keeping distances and being careful if they show any of the symptoms of the coronavirus.
