Only with advanced safety systems will the new cars be available on the EU market from mid-2022 as decided by the Council of the European Union.
The new rules will help reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries on EU roads, while also strengthening the competitiveness of European carmakers in the global market.
One of the most important systems that all new vehicles should have is the one that controls and prevents the start and driving of the vehicle in case it detects that the driver is under the influence of alcohol!
Also the installation of the so-called “black boxes” and vehicles will be a fact as the new legislation provides for the existence of event data recording systems!
What are the mandatory systems
According to the new rules, all motor vehicles (including trucks, buses, vans and SUVs) must be equipped with the following safety features:
* intelligent speed control,
* installation of a system to prevent driving under the influence of alcohol,
* emergency parking signals,
* reversing detection systems,
* event data logging systems,
* accurate tire pressure monitoring,
* drowsiness and driver alert systems,
* advanced driver distraction warning systems.
* advanced emergency braking systems,
* emergency lane stay systems,
* Extended head protection areas capable of mitigating injuries in collisions with vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians and cyclists.
In addition to the above, manufacturers are required to build their vehicles in such a way as to significantly reduce the blind spots around them.
They should also be equipped with pedestrian, bicycle and other vehicle detection systems.
The next step for the Commission is the smooth transition to cars with autonomous driving systems.
