Greek tradition wants school children to hold parades on the eve of the national and religious holiday on 25. March. While in Athens and other big cities, a lottery decides who is to parade and who remains out due to the high number of pupils, in some remote Greek areas there are no enough children even to hold the flag.
The primary school on the island of Gavdos has just three pupils. The teacher decided to assign two more children to join the group in order to have a passable parade to honor the heroes of the Greek Revolution 1821 against the Ottoman Empire.
Holding a big flag, the five children and the teacher walked through the main street of Gavdos.
Gavdos is the southernmost Greek island, located to the south of its much larger neighbour, Crete. It forms a community with surrounding islets and was part of the former Selino Province. The island is situated at the southern tip of Greece, thus making it the southernmost point of the entire European continent.
According to 2011 consensues, the number of inhabitants is 152.
