Travellers from Balkan and central-European countries are continually heading our way. With borders open with Bulgaria travellers have had to wait in a 5 hour queue under the hot sun.
Promachonas is currently the only border-crossing open in North Greece for road tourists. The volume of traffic has been overwhelming and vehicles extended into 12 kilometres at sometime.
According to state broadcaster ERT TV, travellers come mainly from Bulgaria, Romania and Serbia, but also Greeks living in Germany are making their way into Greece.
A total of four Health teams have set up sampling areas and conduct the normal formalities required for coronavirus.
In addition, 20 buses with tourists from Serbia have crossed into Greece since early morning Saturday, ERT reported. All necessary tests have been performed on tourists form Serbia normally using the Evzoni border-crossing that remains closed to Holiday makers.
An average of 21,000-22,000 vehicles passed through Promachonas in the last 3 days.
On Friday, the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry summoned the Greek Ambassador to Sofia to raise the issue and discuss the new rules for entering Greece.
Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Petko Doykov has also reported to our government the difficult situation at the Kulata-Promachonas border checkpoint and are both hoping to solve the problems caused. The Bulgarian government also raised the issue of creating separate lanes at the border for European Union citizens and third countries, in order to speed up their passage.
For now the Greek Ambassador in Bulgaria has relayed the concerns mentioning that this was not possible at this stage, however he would convey Sofia’s concerns to Athens.
According to ERT, the opening of another check point would solve the issue at hand; we will have to see in the next few days what the outcome.
