New data for easier compliance with the measures against the coronavirus pandemic is brought by the Ministry of Digital Government. Citizens now have the option of entering a digital ID on their mobile phone to identify themselves with the vaccination certificate, without having to show their police ID.
The addition of the digital identity (certificate of identity) to the Covid-Free Wallet application is expected to greatly facilitate citizens and businesses in the process of checking for coronavirus certificates (vaccination, disease or diagnostic test). This is an initiative of the Ministry of Digital Government in cooperation with the Ministry of Citizen Protection.
The new version of the Covid Free GR Wallet application can be used by those citizens who have downloaded the new version of the Covid Free GR Wallet application on their mobile (iOS and Android) and tablet. The application is available for iOS and Android platforms at covidfree.gov.gr.
Not an official identification for travel.
Please note that the digital identity card – the identity card – can only be used for certificate checks in accordance with the measures to limit the spread of coronavirus. In no other case does it replace the Police ID, nor is it a travel document. Therefore, during the control of COVID certificates, the identity card is simply displayed and not scanned by the employees of the stores, except by the competent state bodies and only after their authentication with Public Administration Codes.
What digital identity involves.
The identity card – the digital identity card – contains details of the Police Identity Card and specifically: name, date of birth and photo. In this way, at any point where a COVID certificate is required at entry, instead of their identity, citizens can now display their ID card, without being allowed to be scanned by store employees.
How to “upload” the digital ID.
The process of creating and storing digital identity is very simple. First, the citizen must install the new version of the Covid Free GR Wallet application through the iOS and Android platforms for mobile devices and tablets.
Entering the “Identity” screen and begins the process of issuing the document by entering the Taxisnet or web banking codes (provided that the bank account corresponding to the web banking codes is up to date).
To complete the authentication, you need to enter a one-time password (One Time Password – OTP), which is sent via SMS to the confirmed mobile phone number of the citizen.
Once the authentication process is successfully completed, the ID certificate is automatically generated and stored securely in the Covid Free GR Wallet application.
In addition, the citizen has the ability to save it in the wallet of his device.
Where the data comes from.
The data is extracted from the Register of Police Identification Cards of the Hellenic Police, through the Interoperability Center of the General Secretariat of Information Systems of Public Administration of the Ministry of Digital Government Service. The identity card created by gov.gr receives a unique verification code and QR code.
