Greece:- “Omicron” mutation: How many cases have been recorded in Greece – Large percentages in Attica

According to the results of the genomic surveillance of the coronavirus up until December 27, 2021, a total of 87 confirmed cases of infection with the SARS-CoV-2 virus carrying the Omicron strain have been diagnosed.

It should be noted that these cases do not reflect the actual number of Omicron cases in the community, but only a number of suspected cases to be confirmed, along with a number of cases investigated after random sampling of cases diagnosed within Mobile Health Teams.

At the same time, in the Central Laboratory of Public Health as well as in other regional laboratories, a check is made for possible omicron samples with the real-time PCR method that can separate the omicron samples from the other executives with great reliability.

In this context, tests were performed on 728 positive samples for SARS – CoV-2 per week from 12/20/2021 to 12/27/2021. Of the 728 positive samples, 198 were found to be positive in Omicron (27.2%) with percentages per day ranging between 19% and 39%.

Out of the 728 samples, 181 and 197 samples concerned cases from the mass anonymous sampling outside Attica and in Attica, respectively, carried out by the KOMY of EODY during the week from 20/12/2021 to 27/12/2021.

Omicron mutation 42% of positive PCRs in Attica.

Specifically, in the mass anonymous sampling that took place this week, in the region of Attica, 42.1% (83/197) of the positive PCRs related to Omicron cases, with the percentages per day ranging between 28% and 66%.

In the region only 7.7% (14/181) of the positive PCRs related to Omicron cases, with the percentages per day ranging between 3% and 13%.

Finally, in terms of targeted sampling performed in individuals who had close contact with a confirmed case of Omicron mutation, only 7.6% (89/1178) of the positive PCRs were Omicron cases, with rates per day ranging between 2.7 % and 12.5%.

It should be noted that the percentage of Omicron strain shows a strong upward trend in the territory.
